Our Little Garden Friends

Our little friends, the frogs! Jumping Jack, the garden frog, loves to sit on the sunflowers, and right by the beds. My sister discovered him followed him around the garden for a long time! He probably saw the entire garden.

Our other friend, Compost Caleb, is a little bit bigger and fatter. I have not gotten a picture of him yet. He does seem to like it in there, though! Speaking of compost, we have the most amazing compost blessing: Black Soldier Fly Larvae! The larvae are small wormlike creatures that eat a ton, breaking down the compost extra speedily! When they mature, they are harmless flies without a mouth. They reproduce and die pretty quickly. So when we open the compost, it looks like it is moving! I do have a theory about Compost Caleb, though. He may be eating the larvae! Well anyway, they are a pretty adorable addition that appear to be sticking around!

  1. Seeing this again, I want to tell youagain that I enjoy your writing and your photography. Because you are consciously using your artistic eye as you go about your day, you are noticing amazing things that might be completely unnoticed by a less observant passer-by. Good for you, Zoe!

Oh, as I re-read this, I see that it was Annika (and her artistic eye) who had first noticed and followed Jumping Jack about the garden! You two make a good team! Yeah sisters! I also like the way you research things….like your Black Soldier Fly Larvae. With your (and your family’s) understanding of what these little guys do…you know and see what a “compost blessing” they are! And now you are teaching me and the rest of the world!
